On August 19, 2008 the Securities and Exchange Commission announced the successor to the EDGAR database. The new system, IDEA (Interactive Data Electronic Applications) marks the SEC’s transition from collecting forms and documents to making the information itself freely available to investors. IDEA will allow more up-to-date financial disclosure in a form ready to be used by presenting the information in interactive data format. IDEA is an interactive database that will at first supplement, and then eventually replace, the EDGAR system. This is the XBRL based system that you may have heard about. XBRL is a method of tagging financial information so that it can be accessed and utilized without re-keying the information. Every component of a financial statement will have a unique tag: For example, “Revenue” will have a special tag around it so that (by using special XBRL reading software) an individual can compare the revenue of many companies at once, and download this information to an excel spreadsheet.
